Key technologies of self-healing capacitors
Unit protection device
Capacitor elements do not have an infinite lifespan, and neither do self-healing capacitors. Since polypropylene film capacitors rarely produce predictable short circuits, neither current fuses nor circuit breakers alone can provide adequate protection.
The capacitors are equipped with an overvoltage separator. When a capacitor undergoes a large amount of electrical breakdown due to overheating, overload, or nearing the end of its useful life, the air pressure inside the capacitor housing rises rapidly, causing the top cover to bend and stretch, causing the capacitor length to change. When the expansion exceeds the limit, the internal connection lines are quickly separated and the faulty components are completely cut off.
Self-healing properties
Breakdown phenomenon may occur when the capacitor is overheated, overload or approaching the end service life. This will generate a small arc and it can evaporate the metalized layer in breakdown area within a few microseconds, meanwhile, the pressure herein generated by the high temperature blows the molten metalized film out of the breakdown area, thus forming an insulation area at the breakdown area without metalized layer. Capacitor can still work normally during and after breakdown process.
Wave cutting technology
Reduce loss factor, improve the resistance of inrush current, is key point to enlarge lifetime of capacitor. This technology solves the poor connection problem between metalized layer and metal spray layer which lead to create high losses, and increases the contact area. Thus capacitor resistance of inrush current has been significantly improved.
